Title | PAP SMEAR, CERVICAL AND/OR VAGINAL |
Specimen Requirement | Cervical and/or vaginal scrapings on slide(s). Fix immediately with spray fixative or 95% alcohol. Do not allow air-drying of specimen to occur. After fixation allow slides to air dry before placing in cardboard slide containers. Patient's name should be written in pencil on frosted end of slide. If smear is taken from a specific abnormal site, please so indicate on requisition. |

Clinical Use | The conventional pap smear is intended for use in screening for the presence of atypical cells, cervical cancer, or its precursor lesion, as well as all other cytologic categories as defined by the Bethesda system for reporting cervical/vaginal cytologic diagnoses. |
